Have any of you fic type people been using Archive of Our Own? It's still in beta, but the turnaround is only a day or two when you request an invite, so I went ahead and signed up the other day. I have to say, I'm very impressed. I like the idea of having all my fic archived at a large site where people can easily stumble across it and leave feedback if they so desire, but I hate the cesspool that is ff.net. Also, I find ff.net's interface for uploading and editing fics to be a huge pain in the ass--as a former graphic designer, I actually care a great deal about little things like the number of lines between section breaks or the ability to center certain lines of text--which is why I've only ever gotten around to uploading a few of my fics there. Archive of Our has a much easier interface and the presentation of the fic just generally looks a lot nicer. And it lets you import directly from LJ urls so uploading all my fics was a breeze.

More importantly, however, I love the idea of a fan-driven archive created with the goal of protecting and encouraging transformative works. I love that they're run by a non-profit foundation (seriously, ya'll, take a look at who's on their board). And I love that the whole thing is designed and managed by people who are involved in fandom and understand what fans want in a fiction archive. Their tagging system is fantastic: user-defined tags are linked to the appropriate canonical tags so that, for example, fics tagged Harry/Snape, Severus/Harry, and Snarry are all classified as synonyms of the master tag Harry Potter/Severus Snape and therefore will all show up when users do a search for any of those terms. Brilliant! Plus you can add tags for fic communities and challenges, so it's easy to find stories from my favorite LJ ficathons like [livejournal.com profile] iwry_marathon, [livejournal.com profile] apocalyptothon, etc.

Anyway, ya'll should all go over and sign up if you haven't already. I'd love to see more people and fics showing up over there.

Speaking of fics, I watched all of LOTR with the kid a couple of weeks back and it got me all nostalgic for the good old days of my LOTR obsession. And then I started poking around in my old files and lo and behold there was an old LOTR fic that was totally finished that I'd never posted and another one that was very nearly finished! So I'm going to try and dust those off and get them posted here pretty soon.

In other news, the kid's second annual Amazing Race birthday party is tomorrow. I'm reusing a lot of the ideas from last year, but there were a few events that needed to be adjusted or replaced. I've still got a lot of work to do today to finish getting ready for it, though. So if you'll excuse me, I've got Route Info markers and Road Block clues that aren't going to make themselves.
